Another call for help…good folks…

‘Cause you guys are the bestest! Ok…I have a funky kitchen…ok I admit to having even a weird kitchen. It is scattered with the color red.

Toaster…clock…Hood vent. SCREEEEECH. Yep hood vent.

Tired of red... time for a change. To what though?

It is a metal (think industrial aluminum) hood over an island. It was white (ish) when we bought the house...omg.

old_kitchen

Then I painted it fire engine red. Why? I dunno. maybe to go with my red toaster.

so today…I tried to bring it back to it’s industrial roots tried is the operative word…with a silver/aluminum/zinc...ish...kinda look

and It doesn’t quite hit the mark. she humbly admits.

What do you think??? Maybe darker….But will it look hokey with the little cross hatches?vent hood

Back to white…Or even try and add a wood veneer over and paint white…kinda like Joan’s stunning kitchen recently featured in Renovation Magazine…homina homina…

Thanks for the mention;) I personally love the pops of red, but I understand wanting a change... haven't I seen/heard/read of a burnished copper paint??? Like the color in the photo you show?I think that would look fabu with your stone.
Or what about black??! In my book you can never go wrong with black!

now, will I get $2 since I made 2 suggestions?!

I think it would be fabulous an antiqued bronze. You could paint it a muted metallic copper or bronze and then do a watered down walnut, charcoal grey or black finish and wipe it so it is darker in the cracks and crevices...
Moody and delicious.

This would be one of those projects where I try three different things and then go back to red. I kind of agree with the first few comments about using a warmer metallic that relates to the counter.

Oh I really like that red so funky, but I so understand change, I think BLACK would be the way to go, everything goes with black.

Good luck.....and a dollar huh LOl

All the best,
Kathy :)

I am sooooo voting for black!!!! Even though I adored the red.

Ooooh. I'm torn between a nice bronze or a fresh white. I think both would look awesome.

anything metallic would look great. i don't think you can mess it up. go for it!

I love your kitchen!

If you don't like the cross hacks, cover those with veneer, then decide your paint color. Whatever you do, I'm sure it will be beautiful.

I think I'd go for a metal finish, depends on your counters, I can't see them in the pic very well. Also, what floors do you have? I'm not very helpful here....sorry! I have to see the whole picture. :)

Ok youse guys who say "I'm sure whatever you do it'll look good" and you know who you are...that doesn't help me. C'mon I'm beggin' here ;)

Joan...I DID think black originally...but then i wondered if it would look like a big black mass...But I don't know...

Carla...The counter definately has some coppery streaks and black and white. The floors are just a light colored tile (hate em)But imagine them a dark wood...and while your imagining...imagine a La cornue range...and a butler. Ok I'll stop.

First, let me say i love your blog! I think (just my opinion here....) you should go ahead and keep painting the stainless steel/silver metallic all over, and then add a layer of chalky, milky white. Then, distress the whole thing....letting hints of red and chunks of the stainless show through. Urban, but yet homey, too....maybe even wax it to add to the patina.....(think hints of Swedish farmhouse)....

hi linda, im in clearwater, other side of fl from you. maybe try a verdigris green:

http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=verdigris+green&id=E579400B32B697079FA810767669543345BE1DA7&FORM=IGRE4#x0y0.

not sure how you would create that effect but it might look good.

burnished copper paint sounds good. when we were going to get copper drain gutters for our home there was something that was recommended to create the look of it being more aged-or making it age quicker.

i also like the black idea.

Oh, geez. Now there's a brain tease...or freeze. Personally, I liked the red and think it was the best choice you could have made for your lively lifestyle.
Pick something warm to complement your countertops.

Renae Moore said...

I might paint black then dry brush the metal looking paint over so the black shows through. Don't worry about what's on your floors right now! Love what you have done to update the kitchen from when you bought!
Happy weekend!

Linda, I would paint the crosshatch section a different color than the shaft. I'm really not one for faux finishes but I've had some recent success with Modern Masters (http://www.modernmasters.com/default.asp) metallic finishes. You could do the shaft in a solid metallic finish with the crosshatch section in the metallic finish plus the oxidizing agent for a patina or vice versa. I love their pewter which looks like zinc, and I also like the copper.

Something to keep in mind if you do go this route: The oxidizing process changes over time so even when it's dry it won't be exactly the finished product. When I did the copper patina it looked much bluer than I had hoped and then after about a month turned to the green I had hoped. Use the oxidizing agent sparingly or else it can end up looking kind of faux turquoise ala southwest nursing home.

I think it could look quite good in a dark charcoal zinc kinda colour to give it that semi-industrial look.
Good luck with your project!

I think it would be fun to stay with the metal for a bit longer. I wonder if you did some faux finish on it to make it look like aged copper or metal, almost like a patina.
No need to give me a $1 how about stopping over and help me pick the fireplace wall color?! :) I was hoping to paint this weekend. I don't think it is going to happen since I can't decide. I have to keep in mind if I am going to paint the rest of the room a soft light grey or a nice cream color.
BTW- I haven't done anything with the PW photo yet, but I am leaning towards black and white. xo

Hi, Linda!

My husband walked by and I asked his opinion... he says paint it the color of your utensil holder (?) on the counter.... he seemed very convinced when he looked at the picture.

Definitely. That vase? utensil holder? color!

Unknown said...

I think I'd stick with a metal finish. Some finish that would relate to the overall color of your counters. Then those two would tie together visually and it wouldn't feel so foreign in your space. If you had black counters I'd do black, but black doesn't really relate to anything else. If you win the lottery, you could go for a new SS hood for a modern update!

I love your blog! I love your home and you are my coastal fix!!! This Charleston gal is landlocked in Atl. I love your kitchen and the red was great but I get it - I had to dump the red a while back :) too. I believe in the power of black or white - either would look great but just for kicks I must tell you I replaced my red accents with... turquoise!! marcie@madebymollie's mom.blogspot
ps. I have the same fish plate that you have tucked by your sink :)and i can't wait to see what you decide.

Miranda said...

OK, here's my two cents' worth...

I don't think you should go with ANY paint, or any metal "finish."

Rather, I think just going back to the original metal (underneath those coats of red and white paint) would be the answer.

Stripping paint off metal would, I think, not be too difficult a job. Underneath, you'd find the original metal. IF you were unable to successfully remove every iota of red paint, esp. in those little cross-hatch ridges, that would be OK too (think patina! think wabi-sabi!)

As for my payment, I'll gladly waive the dollar fee if you'll tell me more about that gorgeous sink faucet. I have the same sink (IKEA Domsjo) and have been looking/longing for a similar faucet.

Good luck; it'll be fun to see what you choose!

Loved the red but I am in the aged copper or bronze camp. I am worried about the black being massive unless it was shiny so it would reflect a little and not be a void.

OK ... aged bronze with a bit of patina ...
I will ask my sister to weigh in!

I have to agree with Joan. Little black dress... little black hood vent... classic. Super, duper shiny, like patent leather.

Black would be cool, as would a 'warm' metal. This sounds kinda crazy but what about the burnt yellow that the dog is holding in your kitchen poster. I'm sure that's completely crazy but it just popped into my little head when I was lookin' at your beautiful kitchen.

Linda said...

Your home looks lovely, the flora is gorgeous! For your hood vent I would suggest chrome paint or oil rubbed bronze paint (spray?).

Looking forward to seeing what you choose.

i like the combination of the color white and the stainless steel look :)

stacy said...

You can't go wrong with white. It's timeless. You could add the stainless steel backsplash/shelf over your stove to add pops of the industrial vibe you've got going on! But your sink is classy and gorgeous and the white hood would complement your sink.

I think a verdi gris copper would look fantastic. Look up Modern Masters paint co in CA - but many paint stores carry it. They have a verdi gris kit that would be wonderful. This would go with a modern or old wrold look.

Another idea would be to texture your range hood to totally hide the hash marks. You could do anything with it after that - glaze it (if you see on my blog - I did that to my range hood which was a plain painted cream) - or use a metallic paint. Do samples to see what will work best for you. Linda

OK...I am not much of a faux painting kind of girl....I have looked long and hard here. I think black will be just like you said...dark and boring. Not that I don't like black. White will just disappear. So in my opinion a color is the best option. What about chartreuse, or turquoise??? Can't wait to see what you pick. Don't keep us hanging too long.

ohhhh, I love the red, I really do. That said I am pretty sure WHATEVER you choose to do will be magnifique.

I will be in Tallahassee next week for business...where in that big ole state are you located?
