I think panels would soften the hard edges, but it all depends on the look you're trying to achieve. They would probably be a "must" for me.

I adore the soft architecture that curtains provide. They always seem to make a room better to me. Mind you, they have to be the right curtains.

you are so lucky to have metal windows, can't wait to see how they look. To me, curtains are not a must....

Farmgirl Paints said...

I would, but that's just me. I like the softer look of things:) Can't wait to see your new project.

If this is your living room, no curtains, please!

Pam Kersting said...

Not necessarily. If you are like me, you'll want to let the outdoors in. Can't wait to follow your living room as it transforms!

Rosaria Williams said...

Can't wait to see the final result. No, curtains not necessary!

You have the windows for it, you lucky girl...without curtains the windows will be chic and contemporary! If I remember it right, the view out of the living room window is filled with plants so there's your softening and reason for leaving the panes open.

I don't have a curtain in my house, but then, I don't have any neighbors.

Curtains are not a must,if you have a gorgeous view, the I'd suggest some light blinds you can have pulled up most of the time. If you have no-one over-looking you AND a gorgeous view, I'd have nothing at all......I'm working on the house too, just finished the hallway and daughter's bedroom, starting the main bedroom...TOO EXCITING!! Good luck sweets! xx

Let us see your windows after you have painted THEN I'll give my 2 cents on if you need curtains or not. haha
I like non-functional curtains that just hang on each side just for color!

Linda@ Lime in the Coconut said...

Yes...that's the plan Renae. It kind of has a whole diffrent vibe now that they are black.

Picture later today.

You're asking an existential question here! My bedroom windows are painted black & I just embarked on a sewing project. New curtains for them haha. Although if I didn't have nosy neighbours, I would gladly go without.

p.s: Neighbour, if you're reading this, well...

I forgot to say, I do have the loveliest whitewashed shutters though!

I can picture a black iron rod with panels to the side to soften.

I am really interested in what you have up your sleeve.
How are you going to do it a Mural?

I don't think you have to have curtains as long as long as you don't need them for privacy. If we lived somewhere with big windows and no need to cover them I certainly wouldn't. I love bringing the outside in.

Tara Dillard said...

Do you ever need privacy from this view?

Maybe no curtains is your answer. The metal windows are pure art. Gorgeous.

But then I've seen panels put in that soften & enlarge a window.

Don't you love the counterintuitive aspects of design?

Linda@ Lime in the Coconut said...

Ok...added a pic of one of the now black windows. Curtains look wimpy.

No...don't need too much for privacy. But they are big...and could look cold...industrial warehouse a bit like Yvonne mentioned.

Thoughts??

Melissa said...

I don't think curtains are a must unless you have weird neighbors who like to look into your house...

Personally, the slight industrial vibe of your inspiration picture is right up my alley! I vote for no curtains, but not sure if that kind of sparse industrial look will suit the rest of your house.

Greyfreth said...

Oooo I love the industrial windows and no curtains- I wish I had a space that would embrace that! Dreamy goodness.

Hi Linda!
The curtain thing. Just depends. You don't have a privacy issue. You don't like the curtains you have now........I say try it without the curtains for a while,if you change your mind, you have nothing to use.

sealaura said...

big windows and light. It is a must for me, I'm not big on curtains, but maybe some light ones for privacy. you have such great taste, I'm sure you will find the perfect ones.

Thanks for stopping by, Linda
Glad you felt a personal connection to the photo. We always idealize that which we don't have, and you showed me that all is not as it seems. LOL
BTW....I'm in Texas with 5" of snow on the first day of spring! Wonders never cease!

I vote for no curtains. I don't have any in my house. I have split bamboo shades that give me enough privacy during the day and at night I just don't run around the house naked!

I can't vote yet. I need to envision the whole enchilada. Is your decor in this room going to be spare and more modern as in your inspiration one? If so, probably not. But if it's more traditional, perhaps so.

I don't think curtains are a must! I love...love...love the look of metal windows that are painted black!! I wish I had a space that would allow for that! Can't wait to see what you do:)

i dont think you need curtains... i have been in my home 5 years... finally putting some up... but i have some new neighbors (so need a little privacy) xx

I'm thinking some sort of panels would be a good option...

Oh nice. Member a few years back when I wanted to do that in my den. Peoples talked me out of it. Of course...I don't have awesome metal windows. I've always heard that black frames draw the eye outside...and what a view you have! Curtains...I'm leaning towards "naaah". I'm so excited...this is SO you.

Did you say wanna trade babies for man???? Did I hear that correctly? What's your dad's name? I need to name him. The lady at the antique store said she was going to write Bobby Kennedy on the receipt...that's who he reminded her of. Ole Bobster. Lemme know if you want to trade (oh this is the BEST day ever!!)

with windows like that, i don't think you need curtains. i'm a big fan of clean lines, and letting the existing architecture shine on its own without fluffing it up too much. hope you have fun, and thanks so much for the comment over at urban flea, it really makes my day! have a great week!

Silly question dear...YES!!! Curtains are a must. (Coming from a Drapes gal, of course!) Say, ever think of having a button made that people can "grab"? I want it for my blog!! Got you on there anyhoo...without a button! Take care. XO

Beautiful windows don't generally need any dressing in my opinion.

However this depends on the privacy from the outside or if the sun will bother you at any stage of the day..

Metal windows are just divine and I can't wait to see the result!

I love your windows black. They just pop--kind of like black eyeliner! I like the idea of super shear panels like Restoration Hardware has now in Belgian Linen. Just on the side. Or not! I also can see the window "nude!"

I do away with curtains whenever possible...a view into your beautiful outdoor surroundings?? No curtains please....

Kimbydee said...

No Curtains is my vote. At my place I just make sure at night to turn the lights out as I dash from the laundry room to the bedroom, covering the girls with my hands of course! LOL

Lauren said...

yay Linda!! I was never able to open the window pic you'd sent me way back so I'm so happy to see it now! And it looks beautiful!!! I'm totally doing it when I get the chance.

I don't think curtains are a must AT ALL. with that view??!! heaven

Good question! So far, all of our windows are bare. But we don't have neighbors so that's why...and of course, because I couldn't decide. I do like the softness a billowing curtain offers though. Decisions, decisions!

Linda this is my first visit to your blog, I do not know how I have missed it. I have seen your delightful comments throughout blog land for quite a while and always enjoy reading them. I just started a new blog in Jan. so it is fun visiting new blogs or at least new to me. Yours will have to be put on my list, I am probably the wrong person to ask. I am allll about the view and light so many of my windows are un-covered or minimal coverings, blinds, shades etc, no heavy treatments in my life. I do think they can add a softness to the hard lines of a window but neve cover a window is my motto, only frame it. Happy Tuesday, Kathysue

I don't own a single curtain. I do have Venetian blinds (in cherry wood) on a couple of windows to keep the sun out, though.

I don't think window treatments are always necessary. I think your inspiration image looks great without any draperies.
