I've got a big black rescue kitty and she's the sweetest cat I've ever owned. I love her with all of my heart!

Please, please, please rescue a black cat or dog.

Yes...I so agree Squeak. Our Big Black Dawg is a keeper for sure. Even if he does take all the good seating! He was rescued at 15months...owners had him chained to a tree all day, with a kiddie pool to cool himself off in. I am thankful they recognized they couldn't keep him (they worked long 12 hour days).

We took him happily....and the rest is history.

That just isn't right. It's things like this that make me lose a little faith in the human race. Our wonderful Otis is a gorgeous black Maine coon with emerald green eyes who we adopted 12 years ago from a local shelter. We love him with our whole hearts and souls and know he loves us just as much. :) He's such a loving boy.

I had no idea this was a problem. Perhaps when we start looking for another dog, we'll look for a black one.

I just love Big Black Dog....I am sure he thinks that sofa is just for him (is it? hehe)

Otis! Love Maine coons....they are like the great danes of the cat world!!

Renae....as the family saying goes...EVERY couch is his. sigh. None of our other Danes were up on furniture. But somehow this guy gets away with it....

I did not know this sad fact...I don't see what the hangup is about rescuing black dogs and cats, except for superstitious folks who believe what they believe.
I'll check with the local animal shelters and see if this is true here as well.

Here are three reasons:

One, yes... superstition about black animals, usually cats

Two, The dogs who have beige or bright white coats seem to grab the attention of potential adopters more so than black dogs, who seem to be almost invisible, as if, thanks to their black fur, they simply fade into the dark corner of their cage. And the same holds true for black cats, who, amongst siblings or other shelter kittens displaying calico patterns or bright orange fur, are overlooked because they are not as flashy in appearance.

...and three, they can look more threatening....

Oh, if I could only rescue every dog and cat in the world. That is my heaven.

I just discovered I'm not getting your posts in my reader anymore. What's up with that? I thought you'd been exceptionally quiet.

Just found my all black dog in October at a low kill shelter. She had been there since July!

Your flashy black and white guy does not fall into the same category as All Black.

I like the fact she may look more menacing - though only for a split second before she wags her tail and rolls over for a belly rub. :-)

This is the first I've heard of this special awareness month - good post!

I was really surprised and saddened to read this. It's so heartbreaking that any of them are put down. If only we were so rich we could ensure none are put down. On a happier note the last photo is just too darn cute.

It makes no sense and I wish it weren't the case. We found our black lab/short hair mix on the run - starving, scared. Poor thing. Six years later she is still the best dog ever. Not to mention, she has the most beautiful shiny black fur. Bonus? I wear a lot of black, not that this matters, but it sure makes my life easier! I have no hesitations about giving her a big scratch and hug before heading off to work - she can shed on me all she wants! :)
